Seasonal Science: Metabolism & Mood

Two physiological mechanisms to watch this December.

1. The "Metabolic Buffer" for Holiday Feasts While we often think of light therapy for energy, we often overlook its role in glucose disposal.

  • The Mechanism: When we overeat, our mitochondria can experience "electron traffic jams," leading to oxidative stress and blood sugar spikes. Photobiomodulation (Red/NIR) stimulates Complex IV of the electron transport chain, helping the cells process fuel more efficiently.
  • The Protocol: Applying a laser pad to large muscle groups (quads/abdomen) 45 minutes after a heavy meal can act as a "metabolic sink," supporting glucose uptake without insulin spikes. It’s not just recovery; it’s metabolic defense.

Protocol of the Week: The "Turbo" Joint Repair

In Episode 4 of the podcast, Dr. Volkmar Kreisel shared a protocol that is changing how we treat chronic joint pain and arthritis.

It solves the "depth problem" we discussed above by bypassing the skin entirely.

The Interstitial PRP Protocol:

  1. The Fuel: Inject Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) directly into the joint space (knee, hip, or spine).
  2. The Ignition: Immediately insert a sterile laser catheter through the needle into the joint.
  3. The Reaction: Irradiate the PRP inside the body for 10-20 minutes.

The Physics of Depth: Why "Red Light" Isn't Enough

One of the most common questions I get from both patients and clinicians is: "Why do you insist on lasers? Aren’t LEDs cheaper and safer?"

The answer isn't about price. It is about physics.

If we want to treat the skin, LEDs are fantastic. But if we want to treat the brain, the spine, or deep joints, we have to talk about The Scatter Effect.

Here is the breakdown:

  • Incoherent Light (LEDs): Think of a garden hose set to "spray." The water covers a wide area, but it loses pressure almost immediately. When LED light hits the skin, it scatters. By the time it reaches 1cm of depth, the photon density is often too low to trigger a significant biological response.
  • Coherent Light (Lasers): Think of that same hose set to "jet." The beam stays focused and maintains its energy density. Lasers can penetrate the "optical barrier" of skin and bone to reach the mitochondria in deep tissue.

 

The Clinical Reality: When we designed our transcranial devices, we faced a hard truth: The human skull blocks up to 95% of incoming light. To reach the neurons in the hippocampus or the cortex, you cannot use a "spray." You need the power density of a laser to punch through the barrier.

Takeaway: Don't ask "Is it red light?" Ask "Can it reach the target?"
